Would you like to know more about subsurface preparation?

Substrate preparation is crucial so that layers such as tile adhesive, sealant or floor coverings can adhere properly. We will explain to you what you should consider when preparing the surface and introduce you to products for simple surface treatment.

Substrate preparation for tiles

Tiles as floor coverings are durable, robust and easy to care for. However, this statement only applies if correct subsurface preparation was planned for the tiling work. In principle, tiles can be laid on all surfaces using tile adhesive as long as the floor has certain properties. If the subfloor is made of an absorbent material, the adhesive will harden too quickly because the subsurface absorbs water. As a consequence, the tiles lack adhesion.
The surface must above all be clean, dry, dust-free, stable and even before laying the tiles. This is also referred to as “readiness for installation”. The larger the tiles, the more important it is that the surface is not uneven. When preparing the surface, any unevenness, cracks or irregularities must be leveled out. There are leveling compounds, decoupling mats and primers for this. You should always keep the installation height in mind. Especially when renovating, the maximum layer thickness or the total height of the floor structure is important.

BLANKE BASEMAX

When renovating, there is often the challenge of rebuilding a floor or adjusting it to a certain height. As an alternative to screed, there are lightweight leveling compounds that are also suitable, for example, for buildings with a lower load-bearing capacity, such as wooden beam ceilings. BLANKE BASEMAX is a lightweight leveling compound for creating flat surfaces in a composite. The leveling compound can be used to level out uneven surfaces of 5 to 100 mm indoors. As you can see in the pictures above, the leveling compound can be easily introduced and distributed using a trowel and a batten. Slopes can also be modeled using this mass.

Primer

A primer is necessary to prepare the base for further work such as tiling or sealing an area. For example, highly absorbent surfaces, sandy surfaces or plasterboard are prepared. A primer creates perfect adhesion for tiles or plaster, which is crucial for further processing and a long life of the tiles. Easy processing with a roller or brush is possible. Are you looking for a suitable primer? Feel free to take a look at BLANKE GROUND.

Requirements for a primer

A primer is necessary for the following absorbent surfaces:

  •  Cement screed
  • Anhydrite screed
  • Plasterboard Drywall walls
  • Old concrete substrates Plastered walls
  • If there is an existing covering, e.g. B. old tiles

In rooms where there is often high humidity, such as the bathroom, priming before tiling makes sense. The primer also works as a type of moisture barrier. However, primer is not an alternative to waterproofing!
The primer must not be applied to newly poured or slightly damp concrete floors. Before priming, you should definitely wait until the concrete floor has had enough time to dry out.
